Giuseppe Bortoluzzi, assessore al commercio of the City of Venice, announced severe restrictions on the omnipresent street performers such as masqued groups begging for photos with tourists, gypsy musicians in front of restaurants and bars, tiny theaters etc. In the future, they shall need a permission and be limited to ten performers in the centre of Venice. On some places, such as the Campo San Polo, Campo Santa Margherita (why?) and Strada Nova, performances shall be entirely prohibited.

In the face of hundreds of coloured offering counterfeited luxury goods as well as dozens of Albanian conjurors pursuing their delicts every day, the Venice blog does not believe in the success of Bortoluzzi’s plans.

Murder near the Giardini

October 8th, 2006

Until now, the so-called venditori ambulanti - illegal immigrants selling counterfeited goods - were known for smaller delicts. Since September 27, the imported criminality has a new quality. Near the Giardini, currently setting of the biennale of architecture, a Chinese dealer of faked “Rolex” watches killed a compatriot and competitor using a knife. The assassin fled and could even reach the Campo Santa Maria Formosa, before he was finally caught inside a bar. Three policemen were injured. Now, after years of laisser-faire, some politicans want stronger laws.
